Welcome to The First Steps to Recovery

This mini-course is designed for people who are ready to review and deepen the foundations of recovery. It helps you remember what truly supports healing; self-compassion, safety, and structure, rather than chasing new information. These lessons reinforce what you explore in sessions, helping you integrate it as you make progress on the journey.

You’ll explore here how chronic illness is linked to nervous system dysregulation, and how to begin shifting out of survival mode. You’ll also consider creating a healing space that supports your day-to-day life and look at how to reduce daily stressors. These pages are here to support you with regulation, restoration, and steadiness. This work is foundational for everything that follows, and serves as an introduction to the core principles you will return to over and over throughout your recovery.

Introduction to this Mini Course

This phase of the recovery path is not about doing more; it’s about creating the right conditions for your body and mind to shift from survival mode into safety and restoration. These lessons will help you revise and reinforce the principles we use in sessions, so your nervous system learns safety through familiarity and repetition.

There’s no need to rush or achieve – momentum and progress happen through consistency and awareness. Use this mini-course to remind yourself of what matters most, and come back to these principles whenever you need to. Each return here builds the foundation for lasting change and a new way forward.

Pause for a moment and take a slow, steady breath. Each step you take, no matter how small, helps retrain your system and build safety from within.

Lesson 1: How This Works & What to Expect

This lesson introduces the mini-course and how to use through the lessons. You explore how this will supportive, helping shift from searching for answers to creating the conditions for recovery. The mini-course is here to remind you of what works, help you stay steady between sessions, and guide your system toward safety, one small, meaningful step at a time.

Lesson 2: Introduction to the Nervous System

If you’ve ever felt like your body has betrayed you, this lesson is for you. Your body is not broken, and you are not failing. Chronic illness is deeply connected to nervous system dysregulation; meaning your system is stuck in survival mode and unable to shift into a state that allows healing.

Lesson 3: Creating a Healing Space

Your environment plays a huge role in signaling safety to your nervous system and brain. This lesson guides you in creating a cosy space that sends a message of self-care and safety to your nervous system, making deep relaxation and structured rests more effective.

Lesson 4: Softening Your Internal Environment

The recovery journey is not just about what you do — it’s also about the environment you are in. Both your external and internal environments can either support or strain your Mindbody system. This lesson explores how mental overstimulation affects recovery and how to ease off activities that keep your system stuck in stress mode.
